Høgnorsk

Encyclopedia : H : HG : HGN : Høgnorsk

Høgnorsk is an unofficial norm for writing Norwegian, and a conservative version of the minority language, Nynorsk. Høgnorsk has kept most of the original spelling differences between Nynorsk and the majority Norwegian language, Bokmål, which were removed in a series of spelling reforms after 1917.

Bokmål is, compared to Høgnorsk and Nynorsk, closer to written Danish. Reforms in 1917, 1938 and 1959 brought the spelling and grammar of both Nynorsk and Bokmål closer together. These reforms became the subject of heated debate, and conservative, unofficial variants of the written language norms, Høgnorsk and Riksmål, gradually emerged. Høgnorsk is supported by the Ivar Aasen-sambandet and the activists behind Målmannen, but has relatively few active users.
