H.O.T.

Encyclopedia : H : HO : HOT : H.O.T.

H.O.T. was one of the most popular K-pop group of the late nineties. A five member boy bandgroup who played various instruments, they enjoyed massive success alongside the likes of Fin. K.L., S.E.S. and Shinhwa. Like many Korean bands, their name is an acronym - H.O.T. standing for "High-five Of Teenagers".

Formed by SM Entertainment, produced by Lee Soo Man, their songs are a mixture of rap and ballads, with singer Kangta providing most of the ballad vocals. They were a talented group- by the 3rd album "Resurrection", they had written most of their own songs, and the last two albums after that ("I yah!", and "Outside Castle") they had become masters of writing and composing all their own songs. They were all talented dancers- Moon Hee Jun and Jang Woo Hyuk choreographing all their songs. Also they were the first K-pop group to ever hold a concert in the Seoul Olympic Stadium because of the magnitude of their fanbase.

Shortly before their disbandment, they did a Space Jam-like movie called Age of Peace, to wich they also released a soundtrack cnsisting of trance & 2 vocal songs. Korean singers don't make the kind of money American singers do & the issue of money came up with SM Entertainment & the band called haiatus. There was a yearlong call for a boycott on SM Entertainment & fans hopped that SM Entertainment wouldn't let their best-selling boyband slip through their fingers. Rather than resolve the issue, they signed the two most popular members into binding contracts & sent the others packing. The 3 quickly formed JTL. A year later Hee-Jun organized a girl band called MILK.

H.O.T. maintained a squeaky-clean record, avoiding the things South Korea wouldn't tollerate from singers; avoiding millitary time, skipping the country to avoid millitary time, drugs, & dating. There were rumors about Park Ji-Yun & Kang-Ta, but they were dropped.

While no 3 boys came from teh same religious background, they put on a fantastic display of close kinship. They were friends with the lovely Kim Hwan-Sung of N.R.G., who died tragically a week or two shy of his 20th birthday, & rivals with Shin-Hwa.

They were a popular advertising magnet, even had their own soda with the cute phrase "I only drink H.O.T."

The H.O.T. lineup remained the same during the life of the band and consisted of:

Age of Peace was a movie H.O.T made and showed in Japan during their 4th album. It was very futuristic (everything except H.O.T members themselves was computerized), and it was about an intergalactic soccer game. They produced a CD soundtrack to go along with this as well. They won numerous awards from KMTV (Korean MTV), and various music shows that are popular in Korea.

H.O.T. split in 2001 after some contract problems, Kangta and Moon Hee Jun staying with SM Entertainment as solo artists and the remaining members leaving to form new group called "JTL". Jang Woo Hyuk went along with two co-Partners created their own dance company with Woo Hyuk leading his own team and school named "Newest".

Few years after forming JTL, Tony An went on solo and created his own Entertainment Company (Tn Entertainment) and a school uniforms company (Skoolooks). 2005, Moon Hee Jun left the SM Entertainment, created his own company (PS Entertainment).

The Fans

H.O.T was the first group with their own "fan color". Later, other Korean music groups and singers followed. Although H.O.T is no longer here today, the color white still represent the soloists Kang Ta and Moon Hee Jun and group JTL(formed by ex-H.O.T members: Jang Woo Hyuk, Tony An, and Lee Jae Won).

In the years 2004 and 2005, Tony An, Lee Jae Won, and Jang Woo Hyuk all became solo singers. Not surprisingly, white will always be the color of former H.O.T members. With H.O.T's enormous fanbase, it is hoped that H.O.T will reunite once again.
