THE HYDERABAD MATHUR KAYASTHA EDUCATION AND WELFARE SOCIETY
The need to form a society which could cater to the educational and social welfare needs of its members had long been felt by the intelligentsia of the Kayasth-Mathur Community of the State of Andhra Pradesh. This vision became a tangible reality, when its need was advocated emphatically by late Dr. S.N. Mathur and pursued by late Sri Har Pershad, Sri Tej Narain, Sri Shravan Kumar and other like-minded person. With the formation of the H.M.K. Education and Welfare Society, Hyderabad ( herein after referred to as The Society') with Registration No. 75 of 1970 under the A.P.(Telangana area ) Public Registration Act 1350 F (Act I, 1`350 F.) Its concise constitution was drafted by Sri Tej Narain and its Emblem designed by Sri Raghukul Pershad. The Society got the exemption order certificate under Section 80G of the Income-Tax Act, 1961 (ref.H.Qrs.11/12A&80G/30/81-82) from the Commissioner of Income Tax, A.P.II Hyderabad due to the efforts of Sri Shravan Kumar and Prof. G. Krishan Raj Mathur. The exemption is contriving.
The endeavors of t he Society have been to promote educational, cultural, Social, economic, spiritual and intellectual advancement, uplift of the Mathur community and to create a common platform to achieve its aims and objectives.
First Phase: With an inevitably modest beginning in the first year of its existence, the Society expanded its activities with phenomenal speed. Despite its initial financial constraints, the Society had shown remarkable resilience and responsiveness in meeting the ever growing educational and welfare needs of its members in a spirit of fortitude.
An objective analysis of the activities reveals that sincere efforts were made to foster the rich cultural heritage and values, offer scholarships to meritorious students ; financial assistance to deserving students in the form of scholarships; financial aid to widows and economically weak families; along with organizing literary, sports and games, cultural and social welfare activities.
The Society has been awarding Donor sponsored Gold Medal to the best Students of the year and Donor sponsored Merit scholarships (Cash awards )along with a certificate of merit in the Annual General Body Meetings; Donor sponsored Rolling Shields and prizes are given to the winners in the literary, sports and games, cultural competitions held each year. A youth club was started to promote literary activities such as Group Discussions, debates etc., A Mock-Parliament brought the elders and youngsters together to discuss democratic issues. An educational conference with group discussions among teachers on identified topics; Pot-Luck Lunch joined by all teacher participants; declaration in writing of contribution of one day basic pay each year to meet the educational needs of the students in an open session and the inauguration of a Library in the Malwala Palace premises by Shri Shravan Kumar were some of the significant activities.
Besides these literary and educational activities, a Reforms meet was convened presided over by Late Prof. Shiv Mohan Lal and recommendations compiled in the form of a report by late Shri Chander Mohan Lal. A clinic was started at Malwala Palace which utilised the honorary services of eminent doctors of the community including Dr. Bankat Chandra etc., for providing free medicines to the members . A Mathur Telephone Directory (family-wise) compiled by Late Sri B.J. Chandra and financed by Sri Chitra Sain and Dr. Lajpat Rai was published. Raja Shiv Raj Bahadur Memorial Lectures delivered by Prof. G. Kishan Raj Mathur, late Sri Eqbal Chand and late Sri S.K. Sinha and the Dasera/Deepavali Sammelans and dinners could rightly be included as other social activities during the years under review under the Presidentships of late Shri Har Pershad, late Sri Chander Mohan Lal; late Sri Prem Raj Mathur, Sri Tej Narain, Late Raja Shyam Karan, late Sri S.K. Sinha, and Sri Sindhu Raj Mathur.
Second Phase: The Second phase of activities started with the revival of the other wise defunct society for four years and the responsibility fell on its President, Prof. G. Krishan Raj Mathur, the Secretary, Dr. Lajpat Rai and the Treasurer. Sri Avadesh Kumar. The credit for tracing out the misplaced Fixed Deposit Receipts, updating the accounts, and getting the accounts audited goes to sri Avadesh Kumar. Besides organising the mandatory activities. The Society embarked upon Health Care-Needs and Awareness programmes such as Dr. Bankat Chandra Memorial Lectures and Dr. S.N. Mathur Memorial Health Camps. These activities were basically oranised to perpetuate the memory of late Dr. Bankat Chandra and late Dr. S.N. Mathur for their contribution and achievements in life-academic, social community and medical profession. Accordingly Dr. Bankat Chandra Memorial lectures were arranged or Skin Diseases (delivered by late Dr. S.N. Mathur), Heart (delivered by Dr. G.K.Sinha ) and a symposia on diabetes (Dr. Y.C. Mathur, Dr. Vinod Chandra, Dr. Ramapat Pratap, Dr. Shiv Raj, Dr. Premlata, Dr. J.C. Mathur, Dr. Dinesh Raj, Dr. Rupender Pershad gave lectures on allotted sub-topics on diabetes). Dr. S.N. Mathur Memorial Fund was established with specific aims and objectives under the Chairmanship of Sri Shravan Kumar, I.A.S., The two significant and beneficial activities being Dr. S.N. Mathur Memorial Health-Camp on 2nd of October of each year for the benefit of the members of the community and School Health-Programmes organised by the Sivananda Rehabilitation Centre, Kukatpally. A seminar on "The H.M.K.Society Functioning and Future Planning" dedicated to the memory of the founder President, late Sri Har Pershad, was another land-mark. The highlights of this seminar were the Key-note address by Prof. G. Krishan Raj Mathur, presided by late Sri Tulja Raj, I.P.S., and lectures on identified topics by Tej Narain, Santh Kumar, Dr. Ajit Chandra, Dr. Vijay Kumar, A.N. Mathur, I.R. Mathur, late Chander Mohan Lal, Ider Kishore and Dr. Dhurbash Karan.
Yet another academic activity was a conference to discuss the Education and Unemployment problems. In this conference, discussions on some educational and welfare aspects resulted in formulating important resolutions . The topic of discussions in the first session was: Education and Unemployment problems " which was introduced by Dr. Dhurbash Karan and Chaired by Sri A.N. Mathur and the second discussed the "National Education Policy 1987- some aspects" chaired by Dr. Vijay Kumar and the key note address was presented by Prof. G. Krishan Raj Mathur. The highlights of this conference inaugurated by Sri I.R. Mathur were the adoption of four resolutions on (a) Establishment of Guidance Bureau and Counselling Centre (G.B.& C.C). (b) starting of Primary School (c) Introduction of an educational-cess of Rs.5/- per individual earning member and (d) Lectures on National Education Policy - for the benefit of the teaching community.
A religious activity, the first of its kind in t he history of the Society, was in the form of "Shanthi Havan" was organised by the religious Sub-Committee chaired by Sri Kishan Raj with Smt. Dhareshwari, Sri Kishan Kumar Sri Bharat Kumar, Sri Vinod Bhadur and Sri Updesh Chand as idts members, Shanti Havan, performed by some of the leading priests of Bhadrachalam, was organised to create awareness of Agni, as the messenger of Gods and provided an opportunity to pray together for redemption from pressing, problems.
A felicitation cum chowki dinner was another unique social activity which was organised by the former president Late Sri Tulja Draj, IPS at Malwala Palace, to welcome and felicitate Justice Yogeshwar Dayal, Chief Justice of A.P. Sri Sushil Kumar, IPS D.G. and I.G.P., Hyderabad, Sri Vijay Karan, IPS, Commissioner of Police (Delhi) Sri Youraj Karan, Executive Director, Union Bank of India (Bombay)and Sri Pushp Kumar, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests, Hyderabad, A.P. A citation and a moments was presented to them.
Besides the afore-said activities the achievements during the years under review were: (a) The establishment of H.M.K.G.B. and C.C. with a corpus of Rs.85,000/- (b) The establishment of a corpus of Rs.39,000/- for Aid to widows and (c) The establishment of a corpus of Rs.30,000/- for publication of Profile.
A revised Mathur Telephone Directory was published, compiled by Prof. G. Krishan Raj Mathur and financed by Dr. Nitin Chandra and family members of late Dr. S.N. Mathur. A Doctor's meet and a Bank service personnel meet, resulted in the increase of members from 5-6 to around 150. These were some of t he significant activities during the years under review under the Presidentships of Prof. G. Kishan Raj Mathur, Late Sri Tulja Raj, IPS and Raja Ram Karan. Third Phase
The Society under the dynamic leadership of Sri Sushil Kumar, IPS, witnessed and unprecedented development. Innovative activities such as Think-Tank-21st Century Meeting. Elder's Day and Valentine Day were organised.
The think-Tank Vision 21st Century meeting provided an opportunity to academics, doctors, engineers, advocates, administrators and professionals to interact on four identified topics, namely :Career and Job opportunities to students, Kayasthas and Minority status Cultural heritage and values, and progressive policies and reforms. The consensus of opinion was that new avenues need to be explored and t he younger generation made aware of them. A number of social and economic reforms were suggested. It was felt that there is a need to preserve, promote and propagate the rich cultural heritage and values. The forum was against the claim of minority status and community backwardness. Alongside the think-tank meeting a Well-Being -Baby show and a craft mela were organised Elder's day and Dasera Sammelan, Fancy Dress, and Made for each other competitions for couples married for 40 years and 50 years were conducted. Yet another innovative programme was Valentine's Day, which invited all the married couples to contest for the H.M.K.Mr.& Mrs. - 1996. Dr. Sunil Kumar and his Valentine Smt. Smt. Asha were adjudged as The H.M.K. Mr.& Mrs. 1996. Mr. Ashok Raj and Mrs. Poornima were the runners up. A special prize was given under the veteran category to Smt. Sulochana and Sri Jagdish Mohan Lal. Prizes for literary, sports and games and cultural competitions, were awarded.
The H.M.K. G.B.&C.C. embarked upon stream-lining the activities by identifying targeted scholarships as Career Scholarship and financial assistance for short-term computer courses, arranging and conducting Aptitude Tests, organised by Dr,. Prem Lata, Chandra, awarding scholarships to meritorious and deserving students each year and establishing a fairly well-provided H.M.K. Computer Centre at Nirmala School, Hyderabad and offering Basic Computer Courses at a nominal fee of Rs.250/-per module and career scholarships for short term courses.
Yet another significant achievement of the H.M.K.G.B.&C.C. was mobilisation of sponsored scholarships. The Talent of Tomorrow scholarship programme envisaged by the H.M.K. G.B.&.C.C. was sponsored by the Rotary Club, Cramlington, U.K. and The Adi Reddi Memorial Trust, U.K. with a one time donation of Rupees one lakh for the implementation of the Talent of Tomorrow scholarship Programme under the Aegis of the H.M.K.G.B.&C.C. Apart from this the Rani Kalavathi and Raja Sham Karan Memorial Trust sponsored Rs.20,000/- each year to be awarded to the meritorious and deserving students for Civil Services (Main) and Professional Services. The other sponsored Scholarships include. Smt. Madhur Mohini Memorial Scholarship of Rs.1200/- each year sponsored by Smt. Superna and Dr. Nitin Chandra Smt. & Sri Keerat Chand Memorial Scholarship of Rs.500/- each year sponsored by Smt. Rekha W/o Sri Updesh Chandra.
To celebrate the Silver Jubilee year of the Society, various programmes were organised. Hanuman Chalisa Path was organised at Manohar Bhavan by the religious Sub-committee. The Hanuman Chalisa Path commenced with the blessing of Sri Bharath Ramji Maharaj and prasad was given to all the nearly 400 participants. Antakshari Programme was organised by cultural committee, at Indira Priya Darshini Hall, Public Gardens, Hyderabad in which 16 teams, each consisting of two members was conducted by Dr. & Mrs. Sunil Kumar. The winners were 1st Prize to Mrs. Sapna Sajeet Kumar and Miss Jayanti, 2nd Prize was won by Sri Anoop Narain and Miss Manvi Sagar.
Dhamal Youth Festival was organised by the Youth affairs Sub-Committee under the supervision of Dr.(Smt.) Sulochana Mathur at Gandhi Medical College auditorium. A large number of men and women participated in various literary events. Treasure Hunt, informal events, Rounds of Tombola, Seminar on Lavish Mathur's Wedding, cultural shows, Fashion Show and Grand Lucky Dips and sponsored prizes were given to the winners notable being for the best dressed couple_ Mr. Devesh Raj and Ms. Alka Best Boy Mr.Narain, S/o Mr. Arun Kumar, best Girl Miss Megha D/o. Pradeep Mohan Lal and Most attractive Baby - Master Prateek S/o Pravin Kumar.
A gala women's cultural meet was organised by the Women's and child welfare sub-committee under the guidance of Prof. (Smt.) Dhareshwari. at the Indira Priya Darshani Hall. The highlights were a Mother and Child Fancy Dress competition, a Ballet- "Women through the ages", a suspense item for husbands, Sawal Jawab conducted by Smt. & Dr. Dinesh Raj Mathur and Miss Mathur competition. Prizes were given for competitions on the eve of this programme in Salad Preparation, mehendi decoration, flower arrangement, embroidery and rangoli.
Another highly appreciated programme was Independence Day celebration. Sports and Games Meet organised by Sri Vishnu Raj, on Aug.15,1996 at the Vanita Mahavidyalaya, Exhibition Grounds, Hyderabad. The highlights of this programme were a ladies and gents cricket match, various sports and games items, and honouring of various sportsmen who had in the past represented the State at national state, junior state, university and school levels. Memento's were presented to the distinguished sportsmen by the Chief Guest Sri Chander Sain.
For the first time in the history of the society a Teachers Day 1996 was celebrated at Indira Priya Darshini Auditorium, Public Gardens, Hyderabad . This function was arranged to honour all those teaches who had put in 30years or more of service. A shawl and a citiation was presented to them by the Chair person Smt. Gyan Sagar and her education sub-committee members.
Yet another social function organised was Dasera Sammelan 96 at Malwala Palace. An Elder's Day Programme on the lines similar to that held earlier was organised by the cultural sub-committee at Indira Priyadarshini Auditorium Public Gardens, Hyderabad and mementos were given to those elders who had crossed 80 years. A Halloween Children's Programme was organised and prizes were given to all the participants. The highlight of this programme was Kavisammelan, presided over by Sri Manohar Lal Bahar, and participated by 12 poets and the Sanchalan was Sri Ram Kishen Pande.
A destination success programme was organised on Jan 9, 1997at the Indira Priya Darshini Auditorium by the H.M.K. G.B.& C.C. in collaboration with the education Sub-Committee. The highlights of this programme were Computer Awareness Run, Lecture on recent applications of computers by Dr. Surender Kishore, Computer Quiz competition and essay writing competition. A cultural programme, prizes to the winners, award of merit Scholarships/financial assistance to students for the year 1995-96 and Talent of Tomorrow scholarships concluded the function. 70. To meet the needs of the times, the Society constitution has been revised. It has been made more comprehensive and is in time with the changing needs and the vision for the future.
