Encyclopedia : H : HM : HMS : HMS Achille (1798)
The fourth ship of the Royal Navy to have been named HMS Achille, after the Greek hero Achilles. A 74-gun third-rate built at Gravesend and launched in 1798.
She fought at the Battle of Trafalgar and was sold in 1865. At Trafalgar, the Achille engaged the Montanes, also a 74-gun ship, and the more powerful Arganauta, an 80-gun ship. The Achille defeated the Arganauta, but was promptly engaged by the French ship Achilles. After a fierce fight, the Achille was joined by the Berwick, and forced the French ship to surrender.
