Greg Todd of Carmicahel & Todd Philatelists (toddytripzinc@aol.com) has a letter written at Plymouth Sound on February 12, 1811 written by Seaman James Lawrie, on board the HMS Menelaus, to his parents in Edinburgh. The content of the letter is fascinating:"..inform you that our Ship was ordered for the Isle of France (Mauritius) and we had the good fortune and succeeded in taking that Island which the French had so long boasted of, in having the Keys to India, but we made these Frenchmen glad to knuckle under. We landed of Troops 18'000 besides a good many of our Tars, the Terror of France. We landed them on the 30 November (1810) and they surrendered on the 2 December, the Troops were commanded by General Abercrombie, who is a son of Sir Ralph or not, I cannot say....yours til death, James Lawrie, on board H.M.Ship Menelaus".
