HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad was the first foreign bank to incorporate locally in Malaysia in 1994. It is part of the HSBC Group.

HSBC established its first office in what would become Malaysia in 1884 on Penang. It added offices in Malacca (1909) and in Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur in 1910. HSBC did not expand further until 1947 when it opened a branch in Kota Kinabalu. It then opened branches in Sandakan and Tawau, both in 1948, Labuan (1957), Beaufort (1961), and Papar (1962). In (1959) HSBC acquired the Mercantile Bank, and with it Mercantile Bank's branches in Malaysia, which resulted in a quantum jump in the number of HSBC's branches in the country.
