HSU Research is a consumer loudspeaker manufacturer based in Anaheim, California.

About The Company

Hsu Research started in 1991 as an innovator in subwoofer technology. Led by Dr. Hsu, who received his Ph.D. in from MIT, the company's tubular cabinets with extra long ports broke home audio conventions and offered the consumer an unparalleled bang for the buck. The designs were among the first on the market to play notes deeper than humans can hear, down to 16 Hz plus or minus 3 dB. These specialized low notes were found in church musical organs. Dr. Hsu's work on tubular subwoofers became so well known it inspired a hobby on the internet of trying to imitate Hsu subwoofers

Most of Dr. Hsu's subwoofers were initially purchased by high-end audio enthusiasts, who were thrilled to save thousands on subwoofers. The idea came along in the late 90s of making a lower cost box subwoofer for weekend audio enthusiast, and the VTF-2 was born. Combining a conventional box shape with innovative variable tuning technology and special electronics, the VTF-2 became a runaway hit. Customers could truly customize its performance. The maximum output mode became very popular for home theater enthusiasts. Even today the VTF-2 remains one of the most powerful home subwoofers that Sound & Vision Magazine has ever tested. The maximum extension mode kept music listeners happy with deeper bass. Still, the VTF-2 only went down to 25 Hz, not quite to the range of human hearing at 20 Hz. In 2002, Dr. Hsu created a larger, more powerful version of the VTF-2 called the VTF-3 that went down to 18 Hz.

In 2003, the STF subwoofer and Ventriloquist surround-speaker lines were introduced that brought high performance audio to a wider audience. Dr. Hsu felt the real challenge was in engineering a high value, high performance product. Instead of throwing money at issues, novel and innovative solutions were used. The lines fit well into Dr. Hsu's beliefs about making superior audio for many people, not just a priveledged few.

In 2006, the third generation of VTF subwoofers, the VTF HO Series was developed. Using a patent-pending bent-port technology that minimizes port noise turbulence, large 4-inch ports could be utilized in a real-world sized subwoofer enclosure that embodies the Dr. Hsu hallmark of high SAF (Spouse Acceptance Factor). As if the VTF HO series were not great enough, Turbocharger, another patent-pending port extension attachment for the series was also developed. The Turbocharger allows Maximum Extension-mode bass tuning, but avoiding the inevitable port compression artifacts present in achieving this bass tuning by using not one but two 4-inch ports.

Today, Dr. Hsu spends his time personally consulting with customers and Fortune 500 companies. His goal is to design high end audio technology for less. Honest engineering, exceptional sound quality, low prices, and craftsmanship are what Hsu Research is about. Since 1991 they have made "True Subwoofers."
