HUNK
Encyclopedia : H : HU : HUN : HUNK
HUNK is a video game character appearing in Capcom's Resident Evil survival horror series. A special forces operative, he is a member of the Umbrella Security Service (also known as the Umbrella Special Forces Unit) and has appeared in several games, usually as an unlockable character in mini-games.
Very little is known about HUNK's personal backstory (including his true identity) other than what has been revealed through various documents featured thorough the series, as well as official sourcebooks such as the Biohazard Archives. Although an exact definition of his name has not yet been disclosed.
Background
Trained in the training facility located on Rockfort Island during 1996, where U.S.S. operatives were taught to deal against B.O.Ws and other biohazardous outbreak. When he began his actual mercenary career, he completed various classified operations in which he was the only surviving member of his team. Because of his high survival rate (and the low survival rate of his comrades), he was given the nickname "Mr. Death" by his comrades and also developed a rivalry with the notorious mercenary Nicholai Ginovaef, from the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service (another of Umbrella's special task forces). In September, 1998, HUNK was assigned to the U.S.S. Alpha Team under orders from Christine Henri (Head Manager of Umbrella's R&D Facility in France) to infiltrate Umbrella's underground lab in Raccoon City, assassinate renegade scientist William Birkin and steal a sample of the G-Virus. However, the mission went horribly awry when Birkin injected himself with the G-Virus, turning into a monstrous creature. The entire Alpha Team was decimated and the T-Virus was leaked to the city. HUNK managed to survive the assault and procured a sample of the G-Virus. Encountering hordes of creatures and mutants while escaping from the city's sewers and police station, HUNK successfully reached the extraction chopper on the precinct's roof. Afterwards, he was transported to the region of Loire in France, where he delivered the sample to his superiors.
After his mission in Raccoon City, he went through another classified operation in which he and his team transported a B.O.W. capsule to Rockfort Island. Although he has the utmost respect for the island's commander, Alfred Ashford, he also criticized Ashford's confidentiality policy in his report, as he refused to divulge the content of the B.O.W. capsule (an experimental Tyrant model).
HUNK's whereabouts after Umbrella's shutdown by the government are unknown, although it is believed he presently works as a mercenary for hire.
Appearances
HUNK's first appearance was in Resident Evil 2. He appears in one of the game's cutscenes during the course of the first scenario, although he does not actually appear in any of the main scenarios. Instead, he is the playable character in the unlockable minigame titled The 4th Survivor, which covers HUNK's trek to the extraction chopper and fighting off creatures within the RPD precinct. In retrospect, the mini game is split up into two sections. The first section (probably the easiest) is getting from the sewers to the main Police Station hall while fighting (or dodging) zombies, spiders, dogs and crows. The second half of the mini game however requires rather more fighting than dodging and in some cases, ability to take impending heavy damage to health as in some instances (the last two rooms before the very last Mr. X room) the rooms are blocked with zombies from either side.Once the balcony has been crossed, the player reaches the secretary's room. In the normal game, you can find a typewriter, an ink ribbon, an item box, and the secretary's diary here. (lighter or small key) In Hunk's game, however, it is loaded with zombies. It is a common belief that this room is impossible to be crossed without taking damage. This is not true. When the door cinematic is playing, the player has to hold run and forward. Now Hunk will take a step into the room, which prevents him from getting grabbed straight away. Make only a single step, because else you will be grabbed by zombies who stand in the middle of the room. As soon as you made one step, raise your shotgun and aim upward, decapitating one zombie. Then move forward immediately, before the zombies behind you can grab you again. Then make a turn with a sharp angle to Hunk's right, so that you head towards the door but prevent the staggering and crawling zombies from getting you. Note that all this has to be executed with extreme precision, and a little luck would be helpful as well. Another, easier, room with zombies will now come. Then Mr. X will make his second appearance, and after that the game is done. Note that he is blocking the room and you will probably have to take him out. (Mr. X's first appearance is a weaker version, and can be easily avoided with a little patience)

In [[Resident Evil 3: Nemesis]], HUNK appears in the game's final epilogue file after the player has cleared the game eight times. In it, Hunk is shown without his trademarked gas mask, although his face is barely visible. The only other time his face was shown was in Moby Dick's line of Japanese Biohazard figures. HUNK is portrayed as a caucasian man with blond hair and stubble.
In Resident Evil 4, HUNK is an unlockable character in the minigame, The Mercenaries, although he's not involved in the actual game's storyline. His melee attacks in this game are comprised of a Neck Breaker and a kick ("The Riot Breaker"). The Neck Breaker can only be performed at point-blank range after stunning a foe by either shooting the foe in the head or by using a flash grenade. It is an automatic, instant kill, but cannot be used on special stage mini-bosses besides the Bella Sisters in the village stage. His only weapons are the Custom TMP (it has a different, integrated stock and the laser sight is on the side of the weapon and not underneath the barrel. It also reloads faster than the standard TMP) and hand grenades, he also has slightly lower stamina than Leon S. Kennedy and Albert Wesker.
Through the use of a game enhancer, players can gain access to one of two HUNK character models (one without his gas mask) in the online game, Resident Evil Outbreak and its sequel, [[Resident Evil Outbreak: File No.2|File #2]], and use it as a skin for the playable character Kevin Ryman. It is a common belief (although unproven) that HUNK was scheluded to appear as an NPC in an unreleased third installment of the Outbreak series (File #3), especially since data from the second game can be transferred to the first and vice versa. However, Capcom has no official plans to continue the Outbreak series. An early Weekly Famitsu preview of Biohazard Outbreak from October 2002 suggests that HUNK was not the sole survivor of Birkin's mutation, as other USS members were scheduled to appear in the game such as one named Miguel.[link]
