H Kramer and Company

H. Kramer and Company is a brass smelting company located in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, United States. H. Kramer has recently come under pressure from local neighborhood residents and the Illinois EPA for being the number one lead polluter in Cook County, the densely populated county in which Chicago is located.

In the March 2005, Pilsen residents took it upon themselves to start sampling the soil in the neighborhood and around the plant. Twelve initial soil tests found lead levels as high as 37,000 ppm; 92 times the allowable level set by the US Environmental Protection Agency for both residential and industrial soil. Further testing by Pilsen residents found elevated levels of lead around the H. Kramer facility. In September 2005, H. Kramer voluntarily agreed to clean up two sights near its plant. This clean-up effort is still in the planning stages and is yet to begin.

Pilsen residents have organized a group called the [Pilsen Environmental Rights and Reform Organization] (PERRO), which has done most of the organizing work in the H. Kramer campaign. PERRO continues to work for environmental justice in Pilsen.
