The Haga clan of Shimotsuke province were direct descendants of Kiyowara Takashige and relatives of the Utsunomiya. During the 7th century of Japan, the Haga incurred the displeasure of Emperor Tenmu and were exiled to Shimotsuke. Following the 12th century, the Haga then disbanded with the Utsunomiya and took hold of the Haga Castle. However, following the Sengoku Period of the 16th century, the Haga once again joined up with the Utsunomiya under the authority of the son of Utsunomiya Hirotsuna, Utsunomiya Takasada. When the Utsunomiya followed in their lost of land to Toyotomi Hideyoshi however, the Haga were deprived as well.
