Hakkari

Hakkari is a city in the far south-east of Turkey. Coming from the Assyrian word akkare, meaning 'farmers', the mountains were home to over one million Assyrians before 1915. Today it has a population of 58,145 (2000 census) and is the capital of Hakkari Province The province is the birthplace of the renowned 17th century Kurdish poet Ahmad Khani.
