Hakudoshi

Encyclopedia : H : HA : HAK : Hakudoshi

Hakudōshi (白童子, はく どう し, "white child") is a character in the manga and anime series InuYasha.

He is the eighth yōkai (demon) detachment of Naraku that takes the form of a young child (appearing to be about age 6) and is extremely powerful. He is capable of erecting a powerful barrier, and he can regenerate all damage since his heart is not in his body, but inside his brother Akago. Hakudōshi does have a spider scar on his back like Naraku's previous children.

He appears first when a priest under attack by Akago manages to cut him in half, Kan'na took one half and Kagura took the half that became Hakudōshi. Unlike Naraku's other detachments, Akago was created in the sacred land that was Hakurei-Zan. Even though he was never exposed directly to the holy barrier created around the mountain, the purity of this place is reflected in his creation: his pale skin tone, white hair and primarily white clothing which strongly contrasts Naraku's long dark hair and demonic appearance. Akago's holy origins give him a much stronger immunity to holy powers than most demons, which is why he was able to survive the priest's attack and reform into two separate beings rather than being destroyed. This purity was thus also granted to Hakudōshi as he grew from half of Akago. In the manga, this purity is further represented in the pure white barrier that he is able to manifest, although in the anime his barrier is similar to the one Naraku has.

He was able to tame the yōba (horse-yōkai), Entei and recovers a naginata from Entei's original rider, Rengokuki. He continued to follow Naraku's quest to find a way to the boundary between this world and the next in order to recover the last shard of the Shikon no Tama, or Shikon Jewel.

After Naraku manages to get back from the boundary after being injured by InuYasha's Kongōsōha and Kagome's Hama no Ya (using a special arrow from Kikyō that incorporated soil from Onigumo's grave), Hakudōshi is enlisted by Naraku to force Kikyō to come out of hiding.

After a while, Akago and Hakudōshi grow tired of taking orders from Naraku, and begin working together to overthrow him. Since Akago is Naraku's heart, they only needed to become independent to make Naraku lose all of his power, and he created Mōryōmaru protect Akago and be a more powerful body for him.

However, Naraku realized that they were planning to betray him. During a battle with InuYasha's group, Naraku instructed the Saimyōshō to abandon Hakudōshi, allowing Miroku to destroy him with his Kazāna (wind tunnel) attack.

Voice actors

In several versions of the show, including the original Japanese, Akago is given the same voice actor as Hakudōshi, presumably to reflect that they are twins.
