Half and half

Encyclopedia : H : HA : HAL : Half and half

For the sitcom, see Half & Half
Half and half refers to a dairy product, an alcoholic beverage, or a soft drink.

Dairy product

In the United States, half and half is a dairy product with a fat content of about 12%, typically used as a more affordable and lower-fat cream in coffee; see cream.

It is called half and half since it is a mix of 1/2 whole milk and 1/2 cream. It is sometimes used to make ice cream.

Alcoholic beverage

A Half and half is a combination of Guinness stout and Harp lager, with the Guinness in a layer on top. See also: Black and Tan

In the North East of England, a request for a half and half would more commonly produce a combination of Scotch ale and India Pale Ale (IPA). This drink fell from favour when the Scottish & Newcastle brewery were obliged to sell many of their tied public houses and McEwan's Scotch and IPA disappeared from public bars across the North East.

In Uruguay, a "half-and-half," called "medio-medio" in Spanish, is almost a national beverage, comprised of half champagne and typically half wine, but can be half whiskey or rum in place of the wine.

Soft drink

A Half and half, also known as an Arnold Palmer, is a drink consisting of 1/2 lemonade and 1/2 iced tea. It is popular in the Southern United States.
