Half shaft

A half shaft is an automotive term used to describe a driveshaft that goes from a vehicle's differential to one of the driven wheels.

It is so called because it will typically be transmitting half of the available power that is supplied to the differential to which it is connected. Typically 'driveshaft' refers to the shaft providing power to the differential.
