A hall of fame is a type of museum established for any a field of endeavour to honour individuals of noteworthy achievement in that field. In some cases, these halls of fame consist of actual halls or museums which enshrine the honourees with sculptures, plaques, and displays of memorabilia. In other cases, the hall of fame is more figurative, and simply consists of a list of names of noteworthy individuals maintained by an organization.

The Walhalla temple, "German Hall of Fame and Honor", was opened in 1842 in Bavaria.

Hall of Fames in the USA

The first hall of fame created in the United States was the Hall of Fame for Great Americans, established by New York University in 1900. Arguably the most famous sports-related Hall of Fame is the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, often simply referred to as the Hall of Fame, or Cooperstown.

The Automotive Hall of Fame is a hall of fame for notable figures in the development of the automobile industry. Founded in 1939, the group opened a permanent museum in Midland, Michigan, United States, in 1971. A new building was built in Dearborn, Michigan, in 1997 to house the museum.

The International Motorsports Hall of Fame is a Hall of Fame dedicated to honoring those who have contributed greatly to auto racing either as a driver, owner, developer, or engineer. People of many nationalities have been inducted. The organization was founded in 1982 by William France Sr., the founder of NASCAR, and it is currently located in Talladega, Alabama, adjacent to Talladega Superspeedway.

The Motorsports Hall of Fame of America is a Hall of Fame and museum in Novi, Michigan for American motorsports legends.
