Hanahoi

Encyclopedia : H : HA : HAN : Hanahoi

Hanahoi (하나회)(meaning 'of one mind') was a group of military officers in South Korea headed by the former Korean president Chun Doo-hwan(전두환) and were mostly graduates of the eleventh class of the Korean Military Academy in 1955. Hanahoi formed the core of the group that eventually took control of the presidency and government from Choi Kyu-Ha(최규하), a weak president at a time of great political turmoil. After its inital seizure of power on December 12, 1979, this private political organization maintained great influence in Korean politics throughout the 1980's, but was later disbanded by force when Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-Woo(노태우) were put on trial in the middle of the 1990's soon after Kim Young-sam(김영삼) became president.
