Hans-Jürgen Wischnewski

Encyclopedia : H : HA : HAN : Hans-Jürgen Wischnewski

Hans-Jürgen Wischnewski (July 24 1922 Allenstein (now Olsztyn, Poland) - February 24 2005, Cologne) was a German Social Democrat politician.

Wischnewski is best known for his involvement in negotiating with the Somalian government during the joint Baader-Meinhof Gang and PFLP hijacking of a Lufthansa aircraft in 1977. His successful negotiations allowed German GSG-9 troops to storm the plane in Mogadishu and rescue 90 hostages; three of the hijackers were killed in the process.

Because of his good relations with Arab countries he was nicknamed "Ben Wisch". This was later changed to "Ben Cash" because of his duty as the party's paymaster.
