Hanson County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 3,139. Its county seat is Alexandria6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,128 km² (436 mi²). 1,126 km² (435 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it (0.20%) is water.

The county is divided into twelve townships: Beulah, Edgerton, Emery, Fairview, Hanson, Jasper, Plano, Rosedale, Springlake, Taylor, Wayne, Worthen.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,139 people, 1,115 households, and 848 families residing in the county. The population density was 3/km² (7/mi²). There were 1,218 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 99.52% White, 0.10% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.03% from other races, and 0.19% from two or more races. 0.10% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,115 households out of which 34.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.40% were married couples living together, 3.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.90% were non-families. 21.70% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.33.

In the county, the population was spread out with 29.50% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 26.10% from 25 to 44, 21.80% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.20 males.
