Hardball with Chris Matthews

Encyclopedia : H : HA : HAR : Hardball with Chris Matthews

Hardball with Chris Matthews is a talk show on MSNBC (previously CNBC) hosted by Chris Matthews.

Hardball features popular politicians and political analysts talking about political issues. The format of the show can lead to confrontations: During coverage of the 2004 Republican National Convention, Zell Miller angrily stated that he wished he could challenge Matthews to a duel because of the latter's questions.

The show features many regular guests, including Rich Lowry of National Review, Katrina vanden Heuvel of The Nation, former Democratic pollster Pat Caddell, essayist Christopher Hitchens and former member of the Clinton Administration Paul Begala.

On Friday, a segment entitled Hardball HotShots features MSNBC hosts Joe Scarborough, Rita Cosby and Tucker Carlson interject their comments on hot topics with host Matthews. All three hosts' shows (Scarborough Country, [[Rita Cosby: Live & Direct]] and The Situation with Tucker Carlson) do not air on the primetime block on Fridays (A block of shows entitled Crimetime in Primetime air instead). The only remaining show on the primetime block, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, airs normally on Fridays.

Hardball is typically the most-watched show in MSNBC's evening lineup. (Source: Nielsen Media Research, 2002-2005.)
