Harlem Nights is a comedy-drama film starring Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor. This 1989 movie also featured Michael Lerner, Danny Aiello, Redd Foxx and Della Reese. Murphy also wrote and directed. Murphy was the executive producer and Mark Lipsky was the producer.

A costume-rich 1930's Harlem is a style-pleasing background to Murphy-Prior-Foxx and Company. Della Reese is a scene-stealing madame at "Sugar Rays" a hot Harlem nightclub, gambling parlor, whore house. Eddie Murphy is arguably at his best "pre-Cheshire Cat grinning" phase. Prior actually plays straightman to the well picked cast. Arsenio Hall makes a brief appearance as well. Hall's sickenly over-acted bit part does not detract from an othewise excellent and fun to watch film.

Nevertheless, the film was savaged by some critics (21% on rottentomatoes.com), and criticized by some of the actors in the movie, including Richard Pryor, and the director Spike Lee.'''
