Encyclopedia : H : HA : HAR : Harrogate Town F.C.

Harrogate Town F.C. is a semi-professional English football club from Harrogate, North Yorkshire who currently play in the Conference North.

Harrogate AFC was founded in 1914 and changed their name to Harrogate Hotspurs in 1935. The present name of the club dates from 1948 and the club has played at its existing Wetherby Road ground since 1920.

The team has consistantly occupied the upper reaches of non-league football though has never been part of a professional league. Harrogate Town were founder members of Unibond League in 1987 and they were also founder members of the newly established Conference North league in 2004.

In November 2005, they reached the first round proper of the FA Cup for only the second time in their history, the first having been in November 2002 when they were beaten 5-1 away at Conference side Farnborough Town.

The following year they were drawn to play away at Torquay United, their first ever cup game against Football League opposition. The game was played on Saturday 5th November and Harrogate achieved a 1-1 draw to reach the 2nd round draw for the first ever time. In the replay on Tuesday 14th November, Torquay United won 6-5 on penalties after the game finished 0-0 after extra-time. The crowd was a record with 3,300 packing into the ground.

The current manager of Harrogate Town is Neil Aspin, formerly a player with extensive league experience with Leeds United, Port Vale and Darlington.
