Hastings is a city in Adams County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 24,064 at the 2000 census and was 25,437 by the 2005 estimate. It is the county seat of Adams County[Geographic references#6GR6]. It is known as the town where Kool-Aid was invented. Hastings Senior High School is the main highschool.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 25.8 km² (10.0 mi²). 25.5 km² (9.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (1.31%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 24,064 people, 9,610 households, and 5,948 families residing in the city. The population density was 945.2/km² (2,448.5/mi²). There were 10,333 housing units at an average density of 405.9/km² (1,051.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.39% White, 0.79% African American, 0.42% Native American, 2.02% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.39% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.58% of the population.There were 9,610 households out of which 29.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.8% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.1% were non-families. 31.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 12.8% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,461, and the median income for a family was $44,688. Males had a median income of $29,633 versus $21,262 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,941. About 5.6% of families and 10.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.6% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.
