Havelock is a coastal village at the head of Pelorus Sound, one of the Marlborough Sounds. At the time of the 2001 Census of Population and Dwellings, the usually-resident population of Havelock was 471, a decrease of 6.5% over the previous 5 years.

State Highway 6 from Nelson to Blenheim passes through the town. Queen Charlotte Dirive, which provides a shorter but very tortuous road to Picton proceeds east along the edge of the Sounds.

Havelock is the centre for much of New Zealand's Mussel industry.

Among the town's former residents were rocket scientist William Pickering and Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ernest Rutherford.

Havelock should not be confused with Havelock North, in Hawke's Bay in the North Island.
