Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, (2005) is an Indian movie set against the backdrop of the Indian Emergency. It went to 12 film festivals in 6 months including Turkey, Estonia, River to River (Florence), Berlin, Edinburugh, Washington, India (Goa), Bite The Mango (Bradford), Commonwealth (Manchester), India (Los Angeles), Dallas, and Pacific Rim (California).
Synopsis
The film opens in Delhi University with the story of three students, Kay Kay Menon (as Siddhartha Tyabji), Chitragandha Singh (as Geeta Rao) and Shiney Ahuja (as Vikram). It follows their lives over the next five years in a story of politics, love, and ambition. The film is perhaps the best film to have come out from india in the last twenty years apart from 'Bandit Queen' and perhaps one of the best performances in recent years from the debutant Shiney Ahuja. his ability to be a pining lover one moment, a political fixer and a wheeler-dealer the next and ultimately the greatest of lover boy in the climax of the film would not be easy to be performed even by the most seasoned of actors. In fact the other supposedly great performance by the Indian superstar Amitabh Bachchan in the same year in the movie 'Black' looks so unidimensional and flat compared to Shiney's chameleon like act in Hazaron.... in fact the other actors in the film kay kay and chitrangdha singh fade in comparison despite turning out comendable performances. Of course the other star of the film is director Sudhir Mishra whose deft and perhaps the most imaginative screenplay and treatment in a long time ( as opposed to bandit queen's simple and straghtforward narrative) leaves the viewer spellbound. the films sociao-political statement retains the intellectual power and depth and is not overshadowed by the strongly emotional (almost sentimental) love story its woven with. and the climax. perhaps one of the most unpredictable, and touching climaxes written in the history of world cinema. a must watch flm for the viewers of serious cinema.
