Heartland is a geopolitical term, used to refer to a central area of Eurasia that is remote and inaccessible from the periphery. The term Heartland has a particular importance in the works of Sir Halford Mackinder. In his essay The Geographical Pivot of History, he argued that the Heartland was the strategic region of the foremost importance in the World.

The term Heartland is also used as a synonym for the Midwest in the U.S., or central part of any country with economic, geopolitical or cultural significance.
