Heinrich J. Matthaei is a German biochemist, who solved the genetic code together with Marshall Warren Nirenberg at NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. On May 15, 1961, he performed the poly-U-experiment, that opened the door for the understanding of the genetic code. Matthaei and Nirenberg published their results in alternating autorship, demonstrating that an equal couple has won one of the most important scientific races in the 20th century. The key to modern genetics was born at this moment. Later Matthaei was a member of the Max Planck Society in Göttingen. Hans-Jörg Rheinberger reported the concise story of the race for the genetic code: "Experimentalsysteme - Eine Geschichte der Proteinsynthese im Reagenzglas" describes the impact of Matthaei and Nirenberg on biological sciences.
