Hell's grannies
Encyclopedia : H : HE : HEL : Hell's grannies
Hell's Grannies is a skit performed by Monty Python. The skit features a group of elderly women (played by John Cleese, Eric Idle, etc.) who prowl the streets beating up lower class youths.
After the main part of the sketch involving the old women, the story then shifted over to the other problems in the city, including the "Baby Snatchers", where groups of babies and toddlers go and abduct adults standing outside unattended. Another problem was "vicious gangs of keep left signs" which were gangs of keep left signs attacking pedestrians while walking across the street. The sketch was ultimately stopped by the Colonel (played by Graham Chapman) saying that the sketch has become "too silly".
The skit is somewhat of a social commentary; the elderly are often considered "soft-targets" and are thus the victims of criminal activities. However, the Hell's grannies turn the tables, striking fear into the heart of their victims.
