The Henry Ford Health System, based in Detroit, Michigan, is one of the nation's leading health care providers, offering a seamless array of acute, primary, tertiary, quaternary and preventive care backed by excellence in research and education.

Henry Ford, a Michigan non-profit health care enterprise governed by community leaders, records $2.6 billion in revenues annually while providing $105 million in uncompensated care. The system is governed by a 45-member board. Advisory and affiliate boards comprised of 220 trustees provide vital links to the communities served by the system. Henry Ford is managed by President and Chief Executive Officer Nancy Schlichting.

More than 12,700 full-time equivalent employees, including 3,000 nurses and more than 4,000 allied health professionals provide care during more than 2.5 million patient contacts. Henry Ford health care providers perform more than 50,000 ambulatory surgery procedures each year.

Nearly 65,000 patients are admitted to Henry Ford hospitals each year.

Hospitals

Henry Ford Hospital - A 903-bed tertiary care hospital, education and research complex in Detroit’s New Center Area. The hospital is recognized for clinical excellence and innovations in the fields of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics and rehabilitation, organ transplants, and treatment for prostate, breast and lung cancers, among others. Its Emergency Department is a Level 1 trauma center.

Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital - A 344-bed community teaching hospital serving the Downriver and western Wayne County communities. It offers a full range of clinical services, including general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and cardiac care. Wyandotte also provides physical medicine and rehab, ambulatory surgery, inpatient behavioral services, hospice care, 24-hour emergency care, community education and health screening programs.

Henry Ford Bi-County Hospital - A 203-bed acute care hospital in Warren is home to the oldest osteopathic teaching program in the nation. Bi-County offers a full range of clinical services, including 24-hour emergency care, surgery, endoscopy, medical imaging, inpatient and outpatient rehab, sleep disorder clinic, bariatric surgery unit, outpatient pharmacy and a weight management program.

Kingswood Hospital - A 100-bed hospital offering inpatient care for child, adolescent and adult patients with acute episodes of mental illness, as well as day-hospital care, located in Ferndale.

Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital – As the first stage of a 300-bed, full-service hospital, seven beds are open for patients who require a one-day to three-day inpatient stay.

Affiliations

Bon Secours Cottage Health Services - A joint venture with Bon Secours Health System that links Bon Secours and Cottage hospitals (175 beds) on the metro area's east side. The organization provides a comprehensive range of services, including primary and specialty care, home care, outpatient, mental health, rehab, hospice and residential nursing care.

Henry Ford Mercy Health Network - A joint venture with Trinity Health, which includes St. Joseph Mercy in Clinton Township (331 beds).

Henry Ford Medical Group The Henry Ford Medical Group (HFMG) is one of the nation’s largest group practices, with nearly 1000 physicians and researchers in 40 specialties who staff Henry Ford Hospital and 24 Henry Ford medical centers. HFH has more physicians listed as “Top Docs” than any other hospital in metro Detroit in the book America’s Top Doctors.

Henry Ford specialists and primary care physicians practice at Henry Ford Hospital and at 24 medical centers in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Livingston counties. New medical centers opened in 2005 in the New Center Area and Harbortown riverfront district, both in Detroit. Three medical centers provide 24-hour emergency care and ambulatory surgery.

National and state recognitions

HFHS won the 2004 Foster G. McGaw Award for excellence in community service. Henry Ford is the first health system in Michigan to win the prestigious honor, which recognizes an organization for providing programs and services that promote the health and well-being of the community. Cited were Henry Ford’s school-based health initiative, African-American Initiative for Male Health Improvement or AIM-HI, and SandCastles, as well as services that support City Year and the Detroit Wayne County Health Authority.

HFHS was ranked as the top integrated health care system in Michigan and sixth in the nation in a 2004 national survey.

HFHS is the first health system in Michigan to be part of the 100,000 Lives Campaign, a national program to implement changes to enhance quality of care and reduce mortality.

HFH was ranked sixth nationally for safety and quality in the 50 Exceptional U.S. Hospitals listing in the April 2005 issue of Consumers Digest magazine.

HFH is ranked among the top 50 hospitals in America by the AARP, which reviews more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide based on factors such as mortality, physician ratings, accreditation scores and training programs.

HFH is the only hospital in Michigan with 800 physicians and scientists working together as one of the largest medical groups in the country.

Henry Ford’s Minds of Medicine TV Show won its second Michigan Emmy Award in 2004. The program provides an inside look at the doctors and nurses at HFH as they make critical decisions that extend and save lives.

HenryFord.com, the HFHS Web address, earned a platinum award for the third consecutive year by E-Healthcare Leadership. It also won a silver award.

HFHS received the 2004 Governor’s Award of Excellence for enhancing patient care in HFH and its emergency department.

HFMG received the 2004 American Medical Group Association’s Acclaim Honoree Award that recognized its Department of Psychiatry for setting a national benchmark for depression care and suicide prevention.

Clinical excellence

Heart and Vascular Institute - A leader and innovator in comprehensive care, research and education offering one of the nation's largest and most successful heart failure and transplant programs. Specialties include electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, rehab, cardiac and vascular surgery and preventive services such as Heart Smart® education. Josephine Ford Cancer Center - One of the largest cancer centers in Michigan provides a variety of services in six treatment facilities throughout southeast Michigan, including the Henry Ford Novalis® Shaped Beam Surgery Program, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgical oncology and support groups.

Henry Ford Transplant Institute- The institute is nationally recognized for heart, lung, kidney, kidney-pancreas, liver and cornea transplantation, and has its own organ donor program called LifeShare. It’s the most comprehensive transplant program in metro Detroit, and the survivor rates of its patients exceed the national average.

Maplegrove Center - A nationally recognized chemical dependency program for adolescents and adults at the West Bloomfield medical center offers residential (50 beds) and outpatient treatment. Maplegrove and Kingswood Hospital are part of Henry Ford Behavioral Health, which also includes the Department of Psychiatry and seven outpatient clinics located.

Neuroscience Institute - One of the top programs in the country that includes a National Institutes of Health stroke care and research center, a comprehensive epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease treatment and surgery program; one of the largest neurosurgery spine programs in Michigan; and the Hermelin Brain Tumor Center.

Orthopaedics and Rehabilitative Medicine - Team doctors for the Detroit Lions, Tigers and Red Wings, the department cares for patients with a variety of bone and joint ailments, including osteoporosis, and provides the latest advances in joint replacement. The motion analysis lab allows researchers to analyze how bones and joints work together following injury.

Vattikuti Urology Institute - One of the leading prostate cancer programs in the world where patients have access to the some of the most innovative technology and treatment options. It performs more laprascopic procedures using robotic technology for treating prostate cancer than any other center in the world.

Community care services

Services include Ambulatory Pharmacies, located in the Henry Ford Medical Centers and Henry Ford Hospital. Fairlane Pharmacy Services, providing IV therapy to patients in their homes, assisted living facilities and long-term care facilities; Pharmacy Care Management, manages medication for patients; Greenfield Health Systems, a dialysis and blood therapies provider; Occupational Health, provides workplace injury prevention, evaluation, treatment and safety; Henry Ford Continuing Care, with nursing homes in Harper Woods (153 beds) and Roseville (172 beds); Josephine Ford Cancer Center-Downriver, located in Brownstown Township, provides clinical and support services for cancer patients in the Downriver region; OptimEyes, with locations throughout the metro area provides optical services and lasik surgery; and the individual members of Henry Ford at Home, the largest provider of home care services in the state.

Henry Ford at Home

Michigan’s largest home health group provides a comprehensive line of health care services in the home. Services include Henry Ford Home Health Care, a Medicare-certified home health care agency; HealthCore, a medical products resource center with an online division at [www.HenryFordHealthCore.com]; Fairlane Home Infusion, provides IV therapies and medications in the home; Center for Senior Independence, an alternative to nursing home care for the frail elderly; Lifeline, an emergency-alert system; Henry Ford Extended Care, a private-duty nursing service; and the Hospices of Henry Ford, provide hospice services in the home, assisted living centers, nursing homes, and an 18- bed residence. Hospice provides pediatric hospice services through its Kaleidoscope Kids ® program and also SandCastles, a grief support program for children, teens, and their families.

Health Alliance Plan

Health Alliance Plan (HAP) serves more than 2,800 employer groups and 530,000 members. HAP is a nonprofit managed care organization that facilitates health care coverage through a variety of commercial products and government programs: Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Point of Service, Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), Exclusive Provider Arrangement, consumer driven products, health savings accounts and Medicare Advantage. Research and Education

Teaching, research and advanced patient care make Henry Ford Health System a premier academic medical center. Affiliated with Wayne State University's School of Medicine, Henry Ford provides innovative physician training programs and collaborates on leading-edge medical research.

Research

Research studies - More than 150 medical specialists and research scientists, including more than 60 full-time researchers, are involved in several hundred individual research projects. Subjects include stroke, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis, sleep disorders, diabetes and lung diseases.

Research funding

More than $50 million in annual funding is received from internal and outside sources, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), other governmental sources, businesses and private foundations. HFHS ranks in the top 6 percent of all institutions granted funding by the NIH and the U.S. Public Health Service.

Education

Physician, Nursing and Allied Health Education Programs – More than 4,000 physicians, nurses and allied health professionals attended more than 70 special continuing medical education activities in 2004. Many more attended grand rounds and other weekly or monthly conferences at HFH. These include: graduate medical education, which attracts 624 physicians-in-training in 20 specialty and 17 subspecialty programs; undergraduate medical education for more than 700 medical students; allied health, which offers training in 16 specialties; nursing education, which offers bachelor’s, master’s and second-degree programs; and continuing medical education, which provide ongoing training for physicians, physician assistants, clinical nurse specialists and nurses.

Corporation of the Year – This health care sector honor from the Michigan Minority Business Development Council recognized Henry Ford for its commitment to providing business opportunities for minority and women-owned businesses.

Community Partnerships

Henry Ford develops innovative ways to address the social, economic and educational issues that affect the health of the community throughout metro Detroit. These include:

Institute of Multicultural Health - Studies the disparities in health care among people of color and finds solutions for getting early diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Community Health and Social Services (CHASS) Clinic - Provides primary care services to more than 3,500 uninsured Detroit residents every month. HFHS physicians staff the two clinics, which are located in southwest Detroit and in the New Center Area.

School-Based Health Initiative - Provides students access to a health care clinic in 14 Detroit and suburban schools, including primary care, dental services, mental health and health education. The program has demonstrated better attendance and test scores by students.

Virginia Park/Henry Ford Hospital Non-Profit Housing Corporation - Begun in 1975, the program is a joint venture of Henry Ford, Virginia Park Citizens District Council and the City of Detroit to provide housing for people with low and moderate incomes.

Center for Health Services Research – Conducts research focusing on outcomes, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of such diseases as cancer, diabetes, asthma and congestive heart failure as well as common acute conditions.

American Heart Walk – With HFHS as a presenting sponsor the last two years, the event has raised more than $4 million nationally to benefit the American Heart Association.
