Henry Hudson Parkway

The Henry Hudson Parkway is a New York City parkway that stretches from West 72nd Street in Manhattan to the Bronx-Westchester County boundary, where it meets the Saw Mill River Parkway. South of West 72nd Street, the roadway continues as the West Side Highway. It crosses the Harlem River from Manhattan to the Bronx over the Henry Hudson Bridge. The parkway is signed NY-9A for almost its entire length, the exception being the 1.0-mile section north of US 9/Broadway. The entire route is also designated, but unsigned, New York State Reference Route 907V. It is named after Henry Hudson.
The Parkway was completed on October 12, 1937, under New York master builder Robert Moses. It cost $109 million, twice as expensive as the $49 million Hoover Dam that was built in the same period. The Parkway was part of Moses' "West Side Improvement" and included covering the New York Central train line. The covered portion is partially used for the highway and also expands the Riverside Park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.
The Henry Hudson Parkway is a candidate for designation as a New York State Scenic Byway, the first in New York City. At the request of the Henry Hudson Parkway Task Force, in 2005 the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council approved funding to develop a comprehensive corridor management plan, a requirement for its designation.
Combined with the completion of the latest version of the West Side Highway in 2001, there is now a leafy boulevard that runs the length of Manhattan from north to south.
