Henry Sloan
Encyclopedia : H : HE : HEN : Henry Sloan
Henry Sloan was possibly the earliest known blues musician. Little is known about him and there are no existing recordings of him. At first, he was known as the tutor and inspiration for such great blues artists like Charley Patton, who was known to follow Sloan around like a puppy(1). One possibility is that Sloan himself was the mysterious hobo observed by musician W.C. Handy playing guitar at a train station in the early 1900s. His contributions to every facet of modern music can not be overestimated, and yet the details of his life can only remain a matter of speculation.
Life
Very little is known about the life of Henry Sloan. He resided in Indianola, Mississippi around the turn of the century. The only other facts that can be stated about his life is that he tutored Charley Patton in the ways of the blues and moved to Chicago shortly after World War I.Sources and outsidelinks
