Encyclopedia : H : HE : HER : Hermann Roesler

Carl Friedrich Hermann Roesler (* December 18, 1834 in Lauf an der Pegnitz (Middle Franconia), † December 2, 1894 in Bozen) was a German Economist.

Roesler attended the Melanchthon-Gymnasium in Nuremberg and studied law and economics in Erlangen and Munich from 1852 to 1856. In 1856, he passed the first, in 1858 the second state exam and in 1860, he earned both his doctoral degree in law from Erlangen University and in economics from the University of Tübingen. The following year, he passed his habilitation and was awarded a full professorship at the University of Rostock.

In 1878, Roesler was invited by the Japanese government as an adiser to the Foreign Ministry and stayed on as an adviser of the Cabinet. He remained there until 1893. His relationship to the German legation in Japan and to the German community was almost non-existent. In 1878, Roesler had become a catholic what would have meant his dismissal from service in Mecklenburg.

Roesler took influentially part in the preparation of the draft of the Japanese Commercial Code and the Japanese Constitution.

After leaving Japan, Roesler and his family moved to Bolzano, where he died shortly after.
