Herzegovina-Neretva is one of the 10 cantons of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The canton mainly comprises the Neretva river valley area and parts of Herzegovina west of Mostar, its administrative center.
The canton is split into the municipalites of Čapljina, Čitluk, Jablanica, Konjic, Mostar, Neum, Rama, Ravno and Stolac.
The canton is the only canton in Bosnia and Herzegovina with acces to the sea and the only municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina with access to the sea is the Neum municipality. Neum is a town of 2000 citizens (1991 census) and the area around the city is rich with historical and archeological remains after the Illyrians. The Illyrians were a people who lived in Bosnia and Herzegovina for many thousands of years.
The biggest city in the canton and the fifth biggest city in the entire country is Mostar. Mostar is famous for its old bridge and the old city near the bridge. The bridge was recently reconstructed in the summer of 2004.The opening ceremony was attended by several foreign delegates including Stjepan Mesić, the president of Croatia. Croats allegedly bombed the bridge. Mostar is located on the banks of the Neretva river and is divided between Croats and Bosniaks.
Other famous cities in this canton are Čapljina, Konjic and Jablanica. Jablanica and Konjic are famous for battles during World War II and there is a large museum in Jablanica dedicated to these battles.
River Neretva runs through the cities of Konjic, Jablanica, Mostar and Čapljina before it flows through Croatia and into the Adriatic Sea. There are also big lakes in the canton like the Jablanica lake around the city Jablanica. The southernmost municipality in the canton is the Neum municipality in the Adriatic sea and the easternmost munucipality is the Ravno Municipality along the borders with Croatia.
Ethnically, the canton is divided and is a mixed canton between the Bosniak and Croat populations unlike some other cantons which are nearly monoethnic.
Croats form majority in the south, and cities like Mostar in the central part of the canton is mixed and in the north, Bosniaks form majority like in cities Jablanica, Konjic and Prozor.
