High Voltage (Australian album)

Encyclopedia : H : HI : HIG : High Voltage (Australian album)

High Voltage is the first studio album by Australian hard rock band AC/DC, released in February 1975 (see 1975 in music). Six of the album's eight songs were written by Angus Young, Malcolm Young, and Bon Scott. "Soul Stripper" was written by Young & Young, and "Baby, Please Don't Go" is a cover version of a Joe Williams song.

AC/DC was still developing its sound when High Voltage was recorded in September 1974 (see 1974 in music), and Scott and the Young brothers were backed by a different rhythm section than the Mark Evans/Phil Rudd combination featured on their next three full-length studio recordings. The resulting album offered more of a glam rock-influenced sound than the hard-edged, rhythm & blues-based rock 'n' roll for which AC/DC would become famous.

Only two songs from the Australian edition of High Voltage were included on the album's international version (see section), released in May 1976 (see 1976 in music).

High Voltage led to the first of many AC/DC appearances on Australia's Countdown music program. The band's earliest appearances included a now-legendary live performance of "Baby, Please Don't Go" (featuring Scott dressed as a blonde schoolgirl) and a filmed performance of "Show Business."

Main article: High Voltage (international album)

Released in May 1976 (see 1976 in music), and featuring a different cover, the international version of High Voltage was a compilation of Australia's High Voltage and AC/DC's second Australian album, T.N.T. Only two tracks from the original High Voltage, "She's Got Balls" and "Little Lover" were included on the international version. Of the others, "Baby, Please Don't Go", "You Ain't Got A Hold On Me", "Soul Stripper", and "Show Business" were included on AC/DC's '74 Jailbreak, released in the United States, Canada, and Japan in October 1984 (see 1984 in music). "Stick Around" and "Love Song" have not been officially released internationally.
