Highland Avenue (Los Angeles)
Encyclopedia : H : HI : HIG : Highland Avenue (Los Angeles)
Highland Avenue is a major north/south road that runs from Cahuenga Boulevard in the southern end of the San Fernando Valley to Washington Boulevard in South Los Angeles. (However, it is not a major thoroughfare in its southernmost portion ; it is a small residential street from Pico Boulevard to Washington.)
Highland runs parallel to La Brea Avenue on the east and Vine Street on the west. The neighborhood east of Highland on Wilshire Boulevard and Melrose Avenue is officially known as Hancock Park.
At the northern end of Highland is the Hollywood Bowl, a major ampitheater and Los Angeles landmark. Slightly further south is the famous intersection of Hollywood and Highland, now the site of a large shopping center. Near Beverly Boulevard, Highland passes adjacent to the Wilshire Country Club. Hollywood High School, the alma mater for many celebrities, is located on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Highland.
It is usually four lanes wide, but often narrows down to two lanes when crossing residential neighborhoods.
