Highly Skilled Migrant Programme

The Highly Skilled Migrant Programme visa is designed to allow highly skilled people to migrate to the United Kingdom to look for work or self-employment opportunities. The scheme now has a two forms of assessment for applicants aged under 28 as well as an assessment for those 28 and over. It is different from the standard UK work permit scheme because applicants do not need a specific job offer in the UK.
Points system
It is a points-based immigration scheme, requiring a minimum of 65 points to qualify. Applicants who are aged under 28 are allocated 5 points in advance. Points are scored in five main areas (with maximum points shown in brackets):
Education Qualifications (30)
Qualifications have to be to the recognised British standard of Bachelors, Masters or PhD to be awarded the respective points towards HSMP for each level of qualification.
- Bachelors degree (e.g. BA, BSc) - 15 points
- Masters degree (e.g. MA, MSc or MBA) - 25 points
- Doctoral degree - 30 points
Work Experience (50)
For those under 28 years of age:
- 2 years work experience in a job requiring a graduate - 25 points.
- 4 years work experience in a job requiring a graduate - 35 points.
- 4 years work experience in a job requiring a graduate plus at least one year in a senior or specialist role - 50 points.
Past Earning (50)
The minimum earned income in country of residence over the last 12 months prior to the application. Figures in brackets are for those under 28.
- £40,000 (£27,000) per annum - 25 Points
- £100,000 (£40,000) per annum - 35 Points
- £250,000 (£60,000) per annum - 50 Points
Achievement In Field (25)
- Significant Achievement - 15 points. e.g. substantial business success with several branch offices or shops and employees, high level economists, recognised and published IT professionals, leading published academic, top classical musician or recognised film producer.
- Exceptional Achievement - 25 points. e.g. internationally recognised achievements (such as Oscar, Nobel, or Booker prize), holders of recognised world records or an Olympic Medal, senior politicians, heading or starting large companies, architectural design of a world renowned building.
Partner's Achievements (10)
For those married (or unmarried but living together for at least 2 years) a maximum of 10 points can be claimed for the achievements of the partner.
General Practitioners (50)
For doctors currently working as general practitioners in the UK, applications are given priority status.
