As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 46,496 and the density of 776.88 persons per km². The total area is 59.85 km². The name Hikari itself means "brilliance" or "light" in Japanese.
It is connected by railroad with a train station and route 188.
Hikari is bounded with Yanai, Kudamatsu, Shunan, Tabuse in the Kumage District and Shuto in the Kuga District. Yamato merged with the old Hikari to form the new city of Hikari on October 4, 2004.
