Hikaru Shindo (進藤 ヒカル Shindō Hikaru) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Hikaru no Go.

Hikaru, who at the beginning of the series is a sixth grader in elementary school. While looking for things to sell from his grandfather's (Heihachi Shindo) attic he finds a Go board, Hikaru sees a blood stain on it while a companion, Akari Fujisaki, couldn't. He then is possessed by the spirit of Fujiwara-no-Sai and faints as a result. Later he finds out about Sai's past as the Go instructor of the emperor in the Hei'an era and that he had possessed another boy some 200 years before Hikaru. Sai's passion and desire to achieve the highest level in Go kept him in this world. Sai pressures Hikaru into playing Go with Hikaru as his hands since as a ghost he lacks a physical formand as a result of playing for Sai, Hikaru develops a passion for Go and slowly becomes a stronger Go player. An important factor in the development of Hikaru's passion for Go was an encounter early on where Hikaru becomes the rival of Akira Toya, the son of perhaps the strongest living Go player in the series, Toya Meijin. Hikaru (while playing for Sai) defeats Akira in a Go game early on in the series. As a result of a comment from Hikaru and a second lost game, Akira develops the drive to get stronger and beat Hikaru.

From being a member of a school Go club to being an insei and finally becoming a professional Go player a year after Akira, Hikaru slowly changes from being Sai's hands as Sai's former host, Honinbo Shusaku had been to a Go player that Akira views as his eternal rival. Initially Sai's ability catches the attention of many promenient Go players in the series but as time goes on, they too notice Hikaru's natural talent and abilities. Hikaru's desire not to seen as someone (Sai) he isn't changes the role of Sai as the player to that of a coach and mentor. Upon the conclusion of the game between Sai and Toya Meijin on the internet, Sai realizes that his existence was to show that game to Hikaru. In the way Shusaku existed for Sai to play a brilliant game and leave a legacy behind, Sai existed to show Hikaru the game against Toya Meijin and Hikaru existed for another person in the future until the highest level of Go, Divine Move is reached. Sai's disappearance shortly afterwards led to Hikaru's hiatus from Go as he realizes what a genius Sai was and guilt of playing instead of letting Sai play. His hiatus ends when playing a friend from his insei days, Shinichiro Isumi. This is when he realizes that Sai still exists in his game as a result of the impression Sai as a mentor made.
