Hikaru Sulu is a fictional character in the original ' series, played by George Takei. He was originally staff physicist of the USS Enterprise, but ended up being transferred to helm. He gets promoted to captain and gets his own ship, the USS Excelsior, by the time of '. He has one daughter named Demora Sulu who was introduced in . Her origin was depicted in the novel The Captain's Daughter by Peter David.

His ultimate fate has not been documented. It is widely assumed that he retained command of the USS Excelsior after Star Trek VI. In 2350, future Voyager first officer Chakotay was sponsored by Captain Sulu for entrance into Starfleet Academy although this Captain Sulu may have been a descendant. Sulu also featured in the episode "Flashback".

In the TV series, movies, and novels, Sulu is shown to have many interests and hobbies, including fencing, botany, collecting ancient weapons, martial arts, and piloting craft of various eras.

As with many of the supporting characters, he is somewhat of an enigma — his first name was not even established in Trek canon until Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. It was Trek novelist Vonda N. McIntyre who came up with Hikaru as the character's first name. Although it had been mentioned in novels and in , it became canon after author Peter David, who authored the comic book adaptation of Star Trek VI, visited the set of that film and convinced director Nicholas Meyer to insert it into the script. (Source: The Comics Buyer's Guide #1614; March 2006; Page 10.) The character is meant to be of pan-Asian descent, but was raised in San Francisco. Hikaru is a Japanese name, while Sulu is taken from a province in the Philippines. Sulu is not a real Japanese name; the Japanese language lacks a difference between the consonants L and R., and in the Japanese version of Star Trek the character's name is changed to Kato. The closest equivalent to SULU would be する(suru) with means, "to do" in Japanese.
