The Hillsborough River is a river located mostly in Hillsborough County, Florida, USA.
The River
The Hillsborough River flows through Hillsborough River State Park and the city of Tampa, Florida. After leaving the Green Swamp, the river flows 54 miles down into Tampa Bay. It has supported humans for at least 10,000 years, including supplying most of Tampa's water. The Hillsborough river is also home to many endangered species along with some Native American burial mounds.Hillsborough State Park
The Hillsborugh state park includes 2990 acres along the Hillsborough River in north-west Hillsborough County, in Tampa. It supports many Florida environments such as swamps and oak hammocks and many endangered species. The park's purpose is to preserve the "real" Florida. The visitors to the park can particpate in pinicing, camping, canoeing, hiking, fishing and swimming in a constructed pool. There is also a designated place to observe the rivers class II rapids. It is one of the only rivers in Florida with rapids.The Reservoir
Down stream near the city of Temple Terrace is the Hillsborough county reservoir. The reservoir has been Tampa's main source of water since the 1920's. It is about 1300 acres in size and can support about 1.6 billion gallons of water.The Tampa Bypass Canal
The Tampa bypass canal is a 14 mile long flood bypass operated by the Southwest Florida Water Management District. This canal includes several concrete flood control structures. It was constructed during the 1970s. Its purpose is to redirect flood waters from large amounts of rainfall from the Hillsbrough River to Tampa Bay to prevent floodwaters reaching homes and businesses.
