Hip-Hop Is Dead is the title for the upcoming 2006 album by American hip-hop artist Nas scheduled to be released on September 19. The LP will be Nas' eighth album of all-original material, and his first album for Def Jam Recordings. Nas' previous label, Columbia Records, will co-finance the project with Def Jam. Jay-Z will be executive producer of the album. Nas announced the album's title after a performance on May 18 2006. [link]

The album is expected to have a highly anticipated song that features Jay-Z on it. On the song U.B.R. (Unauthorized Biography of Rakim), Nas is quoted as saying "Next book, KRS-One. Peace." This could possibly be hinting there may be a track called (Unauthorized Biography Of KRS-One). Also, Nas has been reported to have talked to Rakim about a possible collaboration.

It is not yet known who will produce the album's individual tracks, but Roc-A-Fella producers Kanye West and Just Blaze are expected to play a role, as well as longtime Nas collaborators including DJ Premier and Salaam Remi. Other famous producers and longtime Nas collaborators such as Dr. Dre and Large Professor are rumored to be working on the project. Others predicted to produce single tracks include will.i.am and Scott Storch. The Game also stated he will make an appearance on the album, as Nas is reportedly doing the same for his upcoming album. Rumours have circulated to the effect that Jay-Z has invited underground hip-hop producer RJD2 to contribute. A record called " Where Y'all At " leaked on the internet on June 20th 2006 and has been said that it's a street record. The new record was produced by Salaam Remi. Currently, it's already getting some airplay on Urban and Rhythmic Radio Stations around U.S like Hot 97, XM Radio etc.

Other possible producers are Eminem, who produced the Cross for the album God's Son, the Alchemist, well-known producer of many Nas's track, and Mobb Deep, likely Havoc.

New Information about the album has just been leaked including a tentative track list and a list of personnel/producers:

Personnel includes: Bravehearts; Jay-Z; Rakim; Kelis; Damien Marley; Pharrell; Busta Rhymes; The Game Producers include: Timbaland, The Neptunes, Will.i.am, Dr. Dre, Scott Storch, Saalam Remi, Kanye West, Just Blaze, DJ Premier, Nas, L.E.S.

Engineers include: Eddie Sancho, John Crouse, Steve Souder, Ray Adler

"Unlike its predecessor STREET'S DISCIPLE, HIP HOP IS DEAD harkens back to Nas' commercial pop-crossover albums as well as the poetic glory days of ILLMATIC. The New York hip-hop legend returns to the thoughtful, introspective philosophy that turned heads early in his recording career (with a little help from rap legend Rakim, the ever rambunctious Busta Rhymes, and former foe Jay-Z). Indeed there are some attempts at fancy, hook-laden production (thanks to Pharrell, Kelis and a newly invigorated Michael Jackson)--but most of the tracks go out of their way to be workaday, subservient frameworks to the lyrics. Sampling records (Louis Armstrong's "The Skokiaan", The Doors "Hello I Love You") that have never been used by other rappers, Nas makes it clear that his focus here is not only on the message but also on the sound. Lyrically, Nas addresses weighty topics as mortality, true love, religion, politics, family, personal responsibility and, of course, the currently “deceased” state of hip-hop. Those themes might seem far from the thug-life reveries of many of his contemporaries, but for Nas it's business as usual. Ironically the record proves that rap music is far from dead."
