"I'll be real with you, anyone who knows even a little bit about African hip-hop knows about the Hiphocalypse." - Cape Town MC Konfab
The Hiphocalypse is a movement of African Hip Hop which has set itself the goal of distributing and promoting quality hip-hop music and positive messages through this music. It incorporates the radio show of the same name which broadcasts on Rhodes Music Radio in Grahamstown, South Africa every Saturday Night. The movement also has a website [www.hiphocalypse.co.nr]
The show and movement began in 1999 when Sensai TATE and SO (Nkanyiso Mthembu), two students at Rhodes University, began doing the show on RMR. Since then the show has gone through six DJs and several regular guest DJs in a five year period, and has become the longest-running show on the station. A mixtape under the banner of the Hiphocalypse has also been released.
The name Hiphocalypse was devived from the concept of a hip hop induced Apocalypse. The end of the world as we know it...and hip hop music is the voice of the revolution in the apocalypse - hence: HIPHO-CALYPSE. (pronounced hip'o-ka-lips).
The show features three hours of real, raw uncut hip-hop, including a huge special every show at 11PM. The show won the inaugral Rhodes Music Radio "Best Show" overall award given to the top show on the community radio station in 2003 and has consistently been voted one of the top shows of its kind in the country. It continually breaks news and gets hold of exclusive tracks and interviews.
