Hipot

Encyclopedia : H : HI : HIP : Hipot

Hipot is an abbreviation for high potential. When used as an electrical test procedure, hipot refers to the ability of a dielectric (e.g., insulation) to withstand the application of a high voltage. The test is often applied to devices with windings, such as motors and transformers. With a properly grounded transformer or motor, ever-increasing voltages will be applied to a winding until a certain potential is reached, or there is a breakdown (arcing through the insulation to ground or to another winding). The dielectric's ability to withstand certain voltage levels is necessary in order to meet some electrical safety requirements from regulatory agencies.
