In 1648 (the date the school classes as its founding year) Matthew Broadley, paymaster to Charles I, endowed a large sum of money to build a school on land donated by Samuel Sunderland of Coley Hall and thus the school opened its doors on its current site in 1661.
1783 saw the construction of a new school hall as designed by Longbottom. Originally a boys school, it became independent (SHMIS, AGBIS) in the 1980s and began admitting girls in the early 1990s. The headmaster, Dr J. Scarth, B.Ed. Ph.D. was appointed in September 2005.
