Hisako Ichiki is a fictional mutant teenager who is enrolled at the Xavier Institute. She first appeared in Astonishing X-Men (3rd series) #4
Character Biography
Hisako is a young mutant who dreams of one day joining the X-Men. Along with her friend and fellow student, Wing (whom, after his death, she later describes as being her best friend), Hisako was attacked in the halls of the Xavier Institute by the alien villain, Ord of Breakworld. Hisako and Wing attempted to oppose Ord, but were overpowered. While both teenagers survived the attack, Wing discovered that he had been injected with a “cure” for his mutant ability of flight. Despondent, he committed suicide after some goading from a Danger Room hologram of her.
In the wake of this tragedy, Hisako, her teacher, Kitty Pryde, and several Xavier students, found themselves trapped in now-sentient and hostile Danger Room with Wing’s reanimated corpse.
Following House of M, all but 27 students at the Xavier Institute lost their mutant powers. The X-Men: 198 Files confirmed that Hisako is one of a handful of mutants to have retained their abilities.
Powers
Hisako possesses a psionic body armor that grants her increased strength and endurance. In addition, the body armor greatly strengthens the force behind her offensive blows. Strangely, Wolverine is able to pierce through Hisako's armor with his claws in Astonishing X-Men #13, although he is not able to go through it with the rest of his body. In the same issue, Hisako, when asked by Wolverine what her powers "are made of," she replies, "It's...my family. I...I mean, the line of my ancestors passes this strength, this protection that I can access, it's hard to..." and trails off.
Trivia
- In the Runaways (2nd series) #2, a time-displaced future version of Gertrude Yorkes mentioned a team of X-Men led by Hisako. One panel even shows the psionic armored arm of Hisako.
- Hisako does indeed speak Japanese, strengthening the idea that she is from Japan instead of simply being an American of Japanese decent. She attempted to use it to insult Wolverine, but he unfortunately also spoke Japanese.
- Hisako's greatest aspiration is to be an X-Man.
- As she was not mentioned to have been assigned to a squad before M-Day, she may be one of the younger students.
