Hisatake Chikanao

Encyclopedia : H : HI : HIS : Hisatake Chikanao

Hisatake Chikanao was a retainer of the Japanese clan of Chosokabe during the Sengoku Period of the 16th century. Chikanao served under Chosokabe Motochika and the latter's son, Chosokabe Morichika. Following the death of Chikanao's elder brother Chikanobu who was killed fighting at Okayama Castle in Iyo Province in 1579, Chikanao assumed control over his family. Chikanao followed in ingratiating himself with Motochika and playing a role in the naming of Morichika as heir to the Chosokabe in 1587 (due to his elder brother being killed in a certain battle during the year of 1586). Chikanao then convinced Morichika to put Kira Chikazane to death due to being one of his rivals and an opponent of the succession of Morichika following the year of 1600. This was through slander of Chikazane being in league with that of the Tokugawa. When the Chosokabe were deprived of their domain over Todo, Chikanao, to the chagrin of many of his fellow retainers, went off to serve the Kato of Higo Province.
