Notes
- Tina Fey was absent on maternity leave for the first several episodes, and returned for the Catherine Zeta-Jones/Franz Ferdinand episode. Maya Rudolph was also absent on maternity leave for several episodes, and returned for the Steve Martin/Prince episode. Rudolph then took a second hiatus before the end of the season for unknown reasons.
- With the March 11, 2006 broadcast, Tina Fey surpassed Dennis Miller as SNL's longest-tenured Weekend Update anchorperson.
- Thompson and Mitchell are updated to contract players.
- Hader and Samberg are added to the cast as featured players. Kristen Wiig is added to the cast in November.
- Beginning in 2005 the show is being broadcast in high definition television, letterbox format.
- Chris Parnell and Andy Samberg's Lazy Sunday skit was featured in an episode hosted by Jack Black. It quickly became an internet phenomenon.
- Hosts were starting to appear in nearly every live sketch in the episode (not counting the monologue). Catherine Zeta Jones, Jason Lee, Jack Black, and Matt Dillon starred in seven sketches. Eva Longoria, Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johansson, Peter Sarsgaard, and Steve Martin appeared in eight live sketches. This seemed to prove difficult for newcomer hosts like Scarlett Johansson and Peter Sarsgaard, because they often missed their cues and fumbled their lines.
- On April 8th, 2006, Antonio Banderas hosted the 600th live episode.
- At the end of the season, Fey relieved herself of her duties as SNL's head writer to produce the NBC sitcom 30 Rock, starring Dratch, Alec Baldwin, and former cast member Tracy Morgan. Despite the pressures of producing a TV show, she has yet to formally leave the Weekend Update desk. Dratch, on the other hand, left the show to work on "30 Rock" full-time.
- Most used host: Antonio Banderas (Appearing in 9 LIVE SKETCHES)
- Least used host(s): Steve Carell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (appearing in only 5 sketches in their respective episodes)
2006-07 Season
Opening Montage
The opening montage is set to be new. Supposedly, it has to do with each of the cast members doing something different around New York. The host will be displayed in the picture frame above the Toys "R" Us store in Times Square, while the musical guest will be displayed on a billboard.Cast
