Timeline of computing

Depending on the strength of the policy of ruling Communist party, communist countries had a slightly different computer development history. Those countries were typically closed markets, requiring special licenses to import technology. The USA also placed these countries under an embargo forbidding the export of more advanced computer hardware. Home computers were often smuggled. The ZX Spectrum was a popular choice because of its small size. Since smuggled computers were still quite expensive, their designs were often copied and it resulted in advanced clones like Hobbit, Pentagon, Didaktik and Scorpion.
