Holby City is a medical drama television serial broadcast on BBC1 in the United Kingdom.
The programme
Holby City began in January 1999 as a spin-off from Casualty and is named after the fictional Holby City Hospital in which it is set. The show follows the lives and careers of staff and patients at the hospital and also deals with a range of clinical and ethical issues. The regular characters are all staff, and patients are played by guest actors (occasionally including some famous names such as Eric Sykes, Phill Jupitus, Michael Jayston, Michele Dotrice and Ronni Ancona).
The show was originally commissioned as a series shown as part of the BBC's winter schedules. Series 1 contained only 9 episodes and ran from January to March in 1999 - the end of this series saw the stabbing of Staff Nurse Jasmine Hopkins and we were left with a cliffhanger of whether she would survive or not. Series 2 kicked off in November 1999 (Jasmine returned to work) and ran until March 2000 - the series finale again seeing a staff member injured. This time it was Mike Barrat, who had stepped onto a poacher's trap whilst on a team building activity with his work colleagues. He badly damaged his leg and viewers were left to wonder if his leg would be saved or not. The 3rd series began in October 2000 with the return of Mike Barrat on crutches, and his leg had been saved. During this series Dr Merrick was murdered and we had Holby's first ever 'whodunnit' which lasted for around 4 episodes. The final episode of series 3 saw the murderer revealed as a patient's father played by George Costigan - his daughter died during an operation and blamed Dr Merrick. He committed suicide whilst trapped in a lift with Anton Meyer played by George Irving. This was to be Holby's last ever long-term break from our screens - and, after 3 very successful series, it proved sufficiently popular to be recommissioned from October 2001 as a serial to be broadcast all year round - there are now 52 episodes in every series.
Holby City is filmed at the Elstree Studios and about 3 to 5 months in advance of broadcast.
The cast has included a variety of actors in regular roles, from new faces to established film and television actors such as Amanda Mealing, Tom Chambers, Art Malik, Robert Powell and Denis Lawson.
In spring 2006, it was announced that a spin-off from the show, to be named 'Holby Blue' was in early stages of production. The spin-off series was confirmed to be a police drama and viewers can expect to see this new show on-screen from 2007.
