Holland Manners was a fictional character in the television program, Angel, and was portrayed by Sam Anderson. He was instrumental in the going ons of Wolfram & Hart in the parts of the first and second season of the show.

History

Holland Manners was one of the oldest and most experienced lawyers in Wolfram and Hart, and the supervisor of Lindsey McDonald, Lilah Morgan, Lee Mercer and a number of other lawyers at the beginning of the series. His job consisted on assigning cases to and enforcing loyalty among the employees by using mind-readers and having disloyal staff "terminated". During his first years in the firm, Holland also recruited personnel, as he recruited fallen champion NĂºmero Cinco.

In early 2000, Holland was supervising the legal team defending assassin Vanessa Brewer, while at the same time rooting out the best among the lawyers under his supervision. He used a pair of mind readers and discovered that Lee Mercer had chosen to move to a rival firm and take his client list with him. Manners inmediately had Mercer shot. The mind-readers also detected that Lindsey had agreed to help Angel save three innocent children, putting Holland in the difficult decision of whether to terminate Lindsey, as he had become Holland's favorite in the company, or not. Lindsey, however, had prepared incriminating evidence against his employer. In recognition of Lindsey's savvy and aware of his potential, Manners allowed him to have a "crisis of faith" and then offered him a promotion to junior partner and a new office, Holland's very own. Manners had been given a promotion to Vice President of Special Projects.

In his last years at the firm, Manners personally supervised Wolfram & Hart's operations regarding Angel. In particular, he oversaw the resurrection of Angel's old sire Darla and orchestrated her return to vampirism by Drusilla in attempts to have Angel corrupted.

Holland Manners was eventually killed by Darla and Drusilla in his wine cellar during their ploy to get revenge on Wolfram & Hart for using them as mere pawns against Angel. Holland's position at the Special Projects Division was given to both Lindsey and Lilah, while the firm itself was overseen by Nathan Reed.

His death did not end his employment with the Senior Partners, however. As is company practice, his contract contained a standard perpetuity clause, binding him to the firm for eternity. As such, he was present when Angel attempted to reach the Senior Partners' via the elevator of Wolfram & Hart. However, the elevator ride Holland gave Angel was only a chance for Holland to give Angel a speech on how Wolfram & Hart simply preyed on the evil already existing in people's hearts, he left and is presumably still working for the Partners in Hell.

During his years overseeing Wolfram & Hart, Holland Manners proved himself to be one of the greatest assets of the firm, as his administration was remembered by powerful clients such as Corbin Fries and Senator Helen Brucker.

Characteristics

Manners had personally selected several attorneys beneath him. Lindsey in particular was one of his favorites, and Manners was grooming him for a profitable future at the firm. He is respected and feared by those around him, and he conceals his incredibly calculating mind behind the guise of a caring father figure, in a manner similar to Mayor Wilkins. He understood how power is tempting, and uses offers of great rewards to control those below him.

This box cannot/shouldn't be including every Buffyverse character. Some suggested guidelines are:

"The people who appeared in the opening credits (Scooby Gang & Fang Gang/FG) appear in the box, and the most important villains/friends who had a significant emotional impact on multiple of those opening credits characters - as long as they have a significant episode count, and preferably if they appear in three or more seasons."
