Hollow Pursuits (TNG episode)
Encyclopedia : H : HO : HOL : Hollow Pursuits (TNG episode)
Hollow Pursuits is a episode primarily centered around Reginald Barclay's addiction to the holodeck. It is also a commentary on Mary Sue fanfiction.
In reality, Barclay is shy and anxiety-ridden. In his holodeck fantasies, the male crew of the Enterprise are rivals he defeats and yet still respect him, while the women are sexual or maternal objects. The others discover his holodeck programs, leaving him deeply embarrassed.
When a technical malfunction threatens the Enterprise, Barclay's imagination provides a key insight into solving the problem. However, contrary to the Mary Sue conventions, the day is saved by the collective efforts of the crew, of which Barclay is only one part.
The episode ends with Barclay deleting all but one of his programs.
